The growth of genetically modified soy is currently not permitted in the EU. It can only be imported. Last week, however, concerns were raised following a positive reaction from The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) regarding an application from US giant Monsanto to sell seeds for its GM soy to European farmers.
According to a new legal dossier prepared on behalf of Testbiotech, if authorized, the sale of herbicide tolerant Roundup Ready soy would violate existing EU law, particularly due to the health effects from residues remaining in the plants from spraying with the herbicide.
The final decision regarding market authorization must now be made by the EU Commission and Member States. You can find more information on this story here.
